Who We Are Five New Bern residents concerned about pollution in the Neuse River established the NRF in 1980, and we have grown into a grassroots organzation with a membership of over 2800 and an active volunteer force of 300+. Our two RIVERKEEPER® Programs, licensed by the national , patrol the entire length of the river from Raleigh to the Pamlico Sound.
What We are Doing The NRF and each Riverkeeper maintains a presence on the rivers in boats, taking water samples for analysis, monitoring the watershed in airplanes, driving along the waterways, walking shorelines, responding to citizen complaints and encouraging others to do the same, whether they are school children, retirees or somewhere in between. We work with regulatory agencies to enforce existing environmental regulations. Our public education initiatives bring environmental awareness throughout the watershed's community. Through education, investigation and advocacy we target the problems of nutrients and sedimentation in a river basin that contains one-sixth of our state's population.
What We Want to Achieve The measure of our success is an improved river which can only come from the vigilant advocacy and monitoring by our Upper and Lower Neuse Riverkeeper and volunteers, and from persistent and diligent public education. We work to inform, to praise, to persuade and to help. The Riverkeepers are our point men. Our staff and volunteers support them. Our members and grantors fuel the whole engine. Our children and grandchildren will yet see a clean and fruitful river. Everything we do is dedicated to carrying out our mission to protect and preserve the Neuse and Trent and their rich heritage of aquatic life and the enjoyment and livelihood of many people.
